OUR CLUB

​North Bay Curling is a welcoming and community-oriented club located on Trout Lake Road in beautiful North Bay, Ontario. Our club is approaching 75 Years in Service, where we are committed to teaching, to developing, to encouraging and to promoting the sport of curling. Our non-profit organization is home to nearly 400 members who enjoy an assortment of membership options, organized play opportunities, instructional programs, and various events.

Our facility consists of 6 sheets of quality crafted ice, along with a wide range of services to meet the needs of all curling enthusiasts. Our seasonal operation boasts a number of great features including, but not limited to:

  • Organized league play

  • Bonspiels and social events

  • Full-time professional management

  • Spacious bar and lounge

  • Instructional programs and lessons with our nationally experienced Curling Professional

  • Extensive office hours

  • Prop Shop

  • Practice ice

  • Hall and ice rentals

Laura Johnston

Laura brings to this position years of experience working in a not-for-profit organization at the Fire Marshal's Council of Ontario, as well as bookkeeping and marketing experience with G.E.M. Contracting.  Laura's background in education is Law and Business Administration from Ottawa University and Algonquin College.  

 

Currently Laura is pursing her Association of Curling Professional credentials through Curling Canada. Obtaining her National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Competition Coach in 2019 as her previous role of Regional Curling Professional at the Granite Club from 2019-2022. Laura has been a member of the North Bay Granite Club since 2014.   

Proud wife and mother, Laura was first introduced to curling at age 5 from her Grandfather at the Prescott Curling Club. Highlights from curling competitively, include the Canada Winter Games for Team Ontario in Bathurst, NB; winning the Junior Toronto Curling Association earning a trip to Switzerland; and most recently, playing vice on Team Northern Ontario at Mixed Nationals 2020 in Saguenay, QC. Privileges such as Brockville and Area Sports Hall of Fame Inductee, recipient of Quest for Gold Bursary, and the camaraderie of teammates are her most memorable. 

 

Tennis and racquet sports were enjoyed by Laura throughout her high school years and have continued into her adult life.

 

Laura is looking forward to being involved, working with the Granite Club Membership, key stakeholders and community dignitaries sharing with them her passion and love for the sports of curling, tennis and pickleball.

Steve Featherstone
Sports Coordinator

Steve Featherstone has been a recreational curler for since 2021 after he and his wife registered for a Learn to Curl course during the pandemic. Since becoming involved in the club he has played in many leagues, and bonspiels, as well as assisted in coaching with our Junior Programming.

 

Steve is a graduate of Recreation and Leisure Studies at Mohawk College and of Outdoor Parks and Forest Recreation at Sir Sanford Fleming College. He has played almost everything at a recreational level and loves to be involved within any community.

 

Outside of the Granite Club he runs the Reptile Adventure Camp, an educational program and summer camp program, along with a few other commitments. He provides private security for events and establishments, is a Municipal Councilor in Bonfield, and a recreational rehab therapist for clients with acute and acquired brain injuries.

 

As the Granite Club's Sports Coordinator, Steve hopes to bring in new initiatives to make the club even more amazing, while being a liaison for our members.

Rachel Monahan
Administration Coordinator

Rachel joined the North Bay Granite Club in 2023 as the Marketing and Events Coordinator through a successful Internship with the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation.

 

After completing her Bachelors of Business Administration at Nipissing University, Rachel is able to apply her knowledge and experience to the full time position as the Granite Club's Administration Coordinator.

 

Rachel is looking forward to assisting with a variety of events hosted by the North Bay Granite Club within the next year as well as contributing to the curling, tennis and pickleball community.

Peter Welsh
Custodian

Peter offers a variety of qualities along with experience to make a great addition to the North Bay Granite Club team. For 15 years, Peter worked at GT French Paper in Hamilton as an Inventory Control Specialist in the shipping department. In his role, he possessed the ability to work efficiently and independently, along with being able to adapt to different situations.

 

Peter is hard-working and reliable and looks forward to making a positive contribution to the North Bay Curling and North Bay Tennis facilities. In his spare time, Peter enjoys fishing, snowmobiling, and music.
